What is Coronavirus?

The Coronavirus is SARS or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome related, causing the disease called COVID-19. The coronavirus has its genetic material protected by a layer of fat, and it has spike proteins, which it uses to attach itself on to any surface.

When the coronavirus enter our body, it tries to attach itself in the lungs, and multiplies rapidly, till it gets identified by the immune system, as a harmful foreign particle. At this point, the immune system starts waging a war with the virus, and during this period, one may be asymptomatic, meaning have COVID-19 but no symptoms or one may develop a few symptoms of COVID-19.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

Depending on the severity of the infection caused by the coronavirus, you may experience any one of the following or even multiple symptoms of Covid19, like

  • Tiredness.
  • Cold and cough.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Fever.
  • Headache.
  • Loss of smell.
  • Loss of taste.
  • Confusion.

If you experience any of these symptoms, take the test for COVID-19. If you have tested positive for COVID-19, then show yourself to a doctor. Do not practice self medication. Follow the instructions that your doctor gives you.

Most cases of COVID-19, are mild and you may be advised home isolation. It is very important to take care of your diet, and have healthy foods that boost your immunity.

  1. Do not skip meals, especially breakfast: Healthy meals are essential as they nourish your body, strengthen your immune system, help your body repair and regenerate healthy new cells, to fight the coronavirus. Start your day with a healthy breakfast like Poha, Chilla, Idli etc. Have your regular food for lunch and dinner, like Roti Daal, sabzi etc. and have healthy in between snacks like fruits, nuts, makhaana etc.
  2. Have a balanced diet.
  3. Avoid deep fried foods as they may aggravate cough.
  4. Avoid spicy foods, especially red chilly powder as they make you uneasy and may cause you to cough
  5. Avoid Junk Foods: Junk foods have an excess of sugar and salt. they cause inflammations and weaken your immune system. To recover faster and boost your immunity, it is very important to stop eating junk food.
  6. Do not Smoke.
  7. Do not consume alcohol.

1. Moringa or Drumstick Leaves.

Drumstick leaves are a superfood and are also heart healthy . They are rich in antioxidants that fight free radical damage, and boost immunity. Just one third glass of Moringa Juice is enough for this food to work wonders on your immunity. If fresh drumstick leaves are not available, then you can even use its powder. Add half teaspoon of Moringa powder to half a glass of water and consume it. You can even add the Moringa leaf powder to your smoothies, soup and daal.

2. Giloy.

There are many benefits of Giloy. Giloy fights respiratory problems and reduces cold and cough. It also reduces inflammation and relieves aches and pains.

  • Heat 2 glasses of water.
  • To it, add a small stem of Giloy, some Tulsi leaves, 2 cloves and grated ginger. Let the water boil with all these ingredients, till the colour changes and the quantity of water is reduce to half.
  • Pass it through a strainer, then add some pepper powder before consuming.

Ginger, pepper and tulsi also have anti inflammatory properties and help reduce cold and cough.

3. Tomatoes.

Tomatoes contain Lycopene which is a very powerful antioxidant that fights free radical damage and reduces inflammation. Remove the tomato seeds before adding it to your daals and curries. Tomato soup is excellent to help ease the symptoms of COVID-19.

4. Garlic.

Garlic contains allicin which has very powerful anti inflammatory properties. It boosts the immune system to fight against the coronavirus. When put in soup, it helps ease sore throat.

5. Whole grains.

Whole grains like brown rice, whole wheat, quinoa etc. nourish you with B Vitamins which help your body regenerate cells post damage done by the coronavirus. Choose whole grains over refined grains, as refined grains like Maida, white rice etc. have little or no fibre and nutrients due to the refining process.

6. Soups.

  • Pour a cup of milk in the saucepan.
  • Add a pinch of Turmeric, some pepper, grated ginger, a small piece of cinnamon, clove, and cardamom. Bring it to a boil and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes.
